The LMRR features four non-competitive, casually-timed "races" of the following distances: 100 meters, ½ mile, 1 mile and 2 miles. You child can choose which event to enter on the morning of the race. All of the races take place within the park so there are no roads or traffic to worry about. There will be volunteers with HAM radios stationed every 50-100m along the course for safety purposes.
Due to the large number of kids racing, the 100m dash and the 1-Mile will have several heats. The 100m dash will be divided into three waves by age. The 1-Mile race will have two waves - one that is parent-friendly and one that is for kids who want to run by themselves.
Details about the race are provided below, but to get you and your kids extra excited, check out this cool video from last year's race! Also, this year kids will receive a commemorative program featuring their name (get a sneak peek here).
The LMRR takes place at the Bennet/Charter Oak Soccer Fields at the corner of Main & Charter Oak Streets - BUT you must check-in at the Manchester Road Race Sports Expo inside Bennet Academy before the race begins. Bennet Academy is about 1/4 mile from the race location so please plan on arriving by 9:30am in order to partake in all of the race festivities.
There is plenty of free parking around Bennet Academy and Charter Oak Park. To get there, take I-384 East to Exit 3 (Main St). Turn right at the end of the ramp and then your first right onto Charter Oak Street. The school is about ¼ mile further down at 1151 Main Street (turn right onto School St).
Before the race, you must check-in at the Manchester Road Race Sports Expo in the Bennet Academy gym (1151 Main St, Manchester, CT 06040) from 8:30-9:45am. At check-in, you will pick-up your child's special commemorative sweatshirt and race bib.
Due to construction at the school, you will enter the gym from two different doors depending on your last name (A-K will use the door on the far left, while L-Z will use the door to the right). There will be volunteers holding signs to make sure you go through the correct door.
With 1,000 kids racing and a 1/4-mile walk to the race start from the check-in location, DO NOT WAIT until the last minute. We have a great team of volunteers to help make check-in as smooth and organized as possible, but please be patient.
After you pick-up your gear, you are invited to stay in the (warm) gym visiting the booths at the Sports Expo before heading over to the race start by 9:35am so you don't miss the sky divers who jump at 9:45am.
In lieu of a race entry fee, we ask that all kids bring at least 2 canned goods to donate to the local food bank. Please drop off your canned goods at the flagpole in front of Bennett Academy.
8:30am - 9:30am: Packet pick-up at Bennet Academy Gym
8:30am - 1:00pm: Sports Expo at Gym
9:30am: Bagpipers entertain kids at the race start/finish
9:45am: Precision Skydiving Team Exposition
9:55am: Singing of the National Anthem
10:00am: Wave 1 of the 100m dash (kids 2-3 years old)
Wave 2 of the 100m dash (kids aged 4 years old)
Wave 3 of the 100m dash (kids aged 5-6 years old)
10:05am: 1/2 Mile Race (kids may opt to do one loop = 1/4 mile)
10:15am: Wave 1 of the 1-Mile race (kids with parents)
10:30am: Wave 2 of the 1-Mile race (kids-only/no-parents)
10:45am: 2 Mile Race
The 100 meter dash and the ½ mile course take place on the grass soccer field by the start/finish line. The 1/2 mile course is two loops around the soccer field so if the 100m is too short, but 1/2 mile too long, kids can opt to run just one loop (for a distance of 1/4 mile) and still earn their medal. The 1 and 2 mile courses combine running on the sports fields with some running on an asphalt bike/walk path.
We will have a "lead runner" (dressed in a rabbit costume!), volunteers and HAM radio operators stationed every 100m along the course to make sure the kids stay on course and are safe. Kids will receive a medal once they cross the finish line. If your child does more than one race, please have them take only one medal so that we have enough for everyone.
Please plan on being at the start by 9:45am since our skydiving friends will be back again this year to kick-off the race in-style.
When you arrive at the start/finish area, there will be special areas organized by race distance and staffed by high school/college runners who will play games with the kids and get them warmed up. There is also a special backdrop that your runners can stand in front of for a great race photo!
The first race (100 meter) will begin once the skydivers have landed & the Star Spangled Banner has been sung (~10:00am). The other races will start within a few minutes of the finish of the previous race. All races will be completed by 11:15am.
Kids are welcome to leave after their race, but they are invited to stay and cheer the other races on. That's part of the fun!
On behalf of Fleet Feet Sports and the Manchester Road Race Committee, many thanks to Henkle, Stop & Shop, ConnectiCare, ECHN, the BEARS ham radio operators and the cross country teams from Manchester High School and Eastern CT State University for their help organizing and sponsoring this fabulous free event.
